In May 2014, a small ROM team travelled to Newfoundland to salvage a Blue Whale that had washed ashore. This unfortunate event presents an unprecedented opportunity to study one of the more endangered species of marine mammals—blue whales are listed as endangered under Schedule 1 of the federal Species at Risk Act. In June 2016, I had the opportunity to visit Research Casting International, on behalf of the Royal Ontario Museum, in Trenton, Ontario, where the whale’s bones were being prepared for display at the Museum. I documented the process of removing the bone elements from the compost they were stored in for over a year for tissue degradation. I also assisted in cleaning the bones and photo ID-ing bone elements.
