The past 10 or so weeks have been spent working from home, and staying home as much as possible due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, many parks and conservation areas have begun opening up and allowing visitors, but a few weeks ago, this was not the case. But this lead to us finding new ways of getting time in nature.
Fortunately, there is a small pond in the corner of our neighbourhood, with a winding trail that circles around it. Almost everyday, as soon as 5PM hits, my first thought is “Should I go for a walk around the pond?” Usually the answer is yes, unless the weather happens to be rainy or unusually cold.
These afternoon walks also lead to the discovery of a new hobby that I enjoy very much… birding! I’ve always enjoyed watching birds fly and listening to them sing, but I never really took the time to try to look for different species or identify what I was seeing. But during these afternoon walks around the pond, I’ve learned so much about bird behaviour and seen so many birds.
